The Letter:
FYJ
The Federation of Young Journalists
26 April 2010
Dear Student,
As you may know, the FYJ is an organisation set up to connect young people to the important social and political issues of the day.
The newspaper industry faces some serious problems:
- Newspaper circulation is declining
- The average age of a newspaper reader is over 55
- Newspapers have failed to engage with the 15 – 24 year old demographic.
We believe that newspapers have lost touch with young people. The needs of the youth audience are largely ignored by the Popular Press, and when young people are featured, they are often represented in a negative way.
The FYJ wants to recruit a dynamic media team to connect young people to the news. We are looking for enthusiastic young journalists with exciting ideas, who understand the needs of a youth audience, and can see how the Popular Press can use digital technology.
Your proposals need to include ideas that appeal to both genders. It is also important that you aim to represent people and events fairly and realistically.
Remember we are working to a tight deadline so keep your ideas concise and to the point.
Good Luck,
T Lloyd
Questions:
Q1) Show us what you know about the Popular Press
Examine two current newspapers from the Popular Press. What are the key features of their on-line and print based formats? Explain how each appeals to its target audience.
Your analysis needs to be based on two newspapers that are each targeted at a different readership.
Q2) As you know, newspaper circulation is in decline. Referring only to changes in the past ten years, explain how the popular press has tried to boost circulation.
How do you think the Popular Press will evolve in the future?
In you answer you need to respond to both parts of the question and include examples where appropriate.
Q3) The aim of the FYJ is to connect young people with the important social and political issues of the day.
Choose a current newspaper from the Popular Press and give us your ideas for its weekend youth section. We would like you to produce ideas for both print based and on-line format.
Tell us which newspaper you chose and explain how your ideas will appeal to a 15-24 year old market. Show how your print and on-line versions might link with each other.
Remember your proposals need to be appropriate to the newspaper for which you are writing, and your ideas need to appeal to both genders, with a focus on real news. You may wish to include sketches.
Q4) Now it is your opportunity to use your knowledge and understanding of the newspaper websites and to show us what your ideas look like.
Produce a design for the on-line youth news page.
Use the A3 design sheet provided. For headlines and images, you may wish to use real news stories; however, do not produce whole articles. You may wish to provide annotation to explain the function of certain features of your on-line news page

Rumors or nonsense { you decide } say Castro died in 1981 and was replaced – see details?
According to an article I read located here – http://www.uncoveror.com/castro.htm
It states ” Fidel Castro died in 1981, and was replaced by a look-alike CIA plant. The dictator ate tainted shellfish and died. CIA infiltrators wasted no time in covering this up, and installing an agent named Alexis Papagos to impersonate Castro, and run the country. This information comes to THE UNCOVEROR via Cuban national, Igor Davidovich Martinez.
Why, then, does the U.S. government maintain the embargo against Cuba? “The CIA is turning a great profit by selling contraband Cuban goods on the black market,” says Martinez, “and they don’t want to give that up.” The CIA sees to it that the embargo stays.
What tipped Martinez off? Before 1981, the real Fidel Castro nearly always wore a military uniform. After that year, “Castro,” really Alexis Papagos, appeared more often in civilian clothing. ”
My question – Truth or nonsense ?
Douglas answers:
nonsense!
don’t you think the CIA knew that Castro always wore military uniform, had they been trying to cover up his death why would the blatantly change a trademark of Castro, unless, of course, Castro never died, but just decided to stop wearing military uniforms!

Help with writing my C.V?
I’m 16 and I really need to find a part time job, but so far I’ve had no luck. I’m pretty sure this is because my C.V. isn’t very good and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to improve it? (I have no previous experience except for volunteering at a charity shop)
Personal Details-
(obviously not going to publish these but they are included)
Education-
I am currently studying for 12 GCSEs at _____. In the GCSEs I took a year early (module 1 science and French) I achieved A*s.
I plan to study for A Levels and go on to University later.
Achievements of note-
-I’ve had some work experience working for Live East Magazine in London. This involved writing and working with others to edit articles for the magazine. I was also required to go out and interview members of the public for a section on fashion in the magazine.
-I contribute to my school magazine
-I have won prizes for debating
-I have a level 2 award in food safety in catering
-I have a yellow belt in kickboxing
-I won an Academic scholarship to my current school
Activities-
-I volunteer for at my local Oxfam charity shop. This involves evaluating and pricing stock, working both independently, unsupervised and with others as part of a team. I have been there for nearly a year.
-I am part of my school’s charity committee and help organise and market events to raise money for various charities
-I write a regular blog
-I’m currently working for my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award
-Contributing to my school magazine
-Contributing to my school’s debating team
I realise it’s a bit rubbish at the moment, any feedback would be great
Thanks
Douglas answers:
It’s actually very good, and has way more content than most people your age could offer.
You may want to add details of your school or college(s). If you need any layout guidance, the Microsoft Office website has many templates if you search for ‘resume’, though be careful to avoid American (US) spellings.
To be picky, when listing achievements, leave out the “I have…” at the start of every item. You have also repeated some as activities. Contributing to your school mag is an activity. An achievement would be getting the prize for the best article, or being appointed the youngest ever editor. Do you see the difference?
Good luck!

How do you buy a car over the internet/phone?
I’m in the market for a new car and I’ve narrowed my choices down. I’m ready to buy, but I really don’t want to spend hours haggling. I’ve read many, many, many posts and articles where people have gotten great deals, quite a few times paying less than invoice by email or over the phone. Things is, they just say they did it, but not how they went about doing it. I’ve tried sending out for quotes using websites, but when they email me back, they just give details about the vehicle and tell me to call for an appointment to come in and talk face to face. Can anyone give me any tips and/or hints being able to perform a transaction like this with out geting screwed over?
Douglas answers:
Assuming it is a brand new car, try finding the invoice for the car and then email a dealer saying that you had received a price to buy it for whatever $$$ amount invoice is and ask them if they can do better.
Another thing to keep in mind is that some people think they are getting a car $3000 below invoice, but in reality they bought it for $500 over invoice and had a $3500 rebate.
Dealers are really good at this. Also buying an ’08 model 4 months into 2009 will motivate a dealer to take a larger loss when selling a vehicle, so that’s something to look at too when reading about the “great deals” people are getting.
I’ve seen many a customer think they were buying a current year new vehicle for a great price, when in reality they bought a “last years” new model.
Hope this helps,
Justin

Mandy asks…
What is your opinion on Two illegals charged in 22 car burglaries Sanchez gave police the fake name?
GLENDALE — Two men were charged Thursday with breaking into 22 vehicles in north and south Glendale to sell the stolen items on the black market, police said.
Juan Alfaro, 25, and Amelcar Sanchez, 24, were charged with eight counts of burglary each for breaking into vehicles early Tuesday in the Adams Hill District, Glendale Police Sgt. Vahak Mardikian said.
Sanchez was charged with an additional 14 counts of burglary for vehicle break-ins Nov. 3 and 4 in northwest Glendale, he said.
Sanchez may also be charged with up to 60 more burglaries in Santa Monica, where his fingerprints match those left at the crime scenes, police said. Glendale police arrested the pair about 2:14 a.m. Tuesday on the 1100 block of East Palmer Avenue after they received a tip from a resident who saw the pair looking into car windows with flashlights, Mardikian said.
“All we needed was that one phone call, and we are fortunate enough that patrol was in the area, and they immediately apprehended the suspects,” Mardikian said.
Police arrested Sanchez at Oakridge Drive and Vista Court. Alfaro was arrested on the 1200 block of Oakridge Drive after police saw him lying in the grass. He told police he was jogging and stopped to do sit-ups, Mardikian said.
“They were caught by surprise,” he said. “They didn’t realize the police were called.”
They allegedly had some of the stolen items.
Sanchez gave police the fake name of Juan Benavides when they booked him into the city jail, Mardikian said. He also had broken window pieces under his nails, Mardikian said.
He confessed that he and his crew of professional thieves burglarized the vehicles, but Alfaro didn’t admit to a crime, Mardikian said.
“Basically their MO is that they break car windows with sparkplug chips and they take any valuable items, especially ones that they see in plain sight,” he said.
After they steal items such as laptops, iPods or navigation systems, they sell them to a buyer, Mardikian said.
Police returned several stolen items to vehicle owners, he said. But police haven’t been able to recover stolen property in the northwest Glendale burglaries, which Mardikian said were likely already sold.
Crime comes and goes in the Adams Hill district, said Chris Welch, president of the local neighborhood association.
“There has always been a little bit of something,” he said.
The group created a message board on its website for residents to report crime and other concerns in the neighborhood, Welch said.
One resident, he said, reported at least three vehicle burglaries Tuesday on Tyler Street.
The association has also been trying to persuade residents to get involved in neighborhood watch groups.
“There have been various times in the past where there have been some small spikes in activity, so it always prompts us to try to energize things,” Welch said.
Councilwoman Laura Friedman, who lives in the same northwest Glendale neighborhood where many of the burglaries occurred, said she and other residents have exchanged e-mails about the incidents. She has also fielded questions from residents concerned about the burglaries.
“I am very glad to live in a city where the police actively investigate these kinds of crimes,” Friedman said.
In other cities, such as Los Angeles, police often will only take a report of a vehicle burglary, she said.
“But in Glendale they really want to catch the bad guy, and I think we can all be proud of the Glendale Police Department,” Friedman said.
Federal immigration authorities have placed Alfaro, an El Salvador native, and Sanchez, of Mexico, on a custody hold pending the outcome of their cases here.
